Ants in home

Ants

The Black Garden ant is the ant that is familiar to all UK households, they will usually build nests in lawns or around walls and can infest properties. Black Garden ants enter homes in search of a sugary food source. In summer winged adults or 'flying ants' will swarm and mate.

There are other types of exotic ant that infest homes such as the Pharaohs ant and the Ghost ant. These infestations require a specialist treatment and should only be carried out by a trained pest controller to avoid making the infestation worse.

Bedbugs

Bedbugs are micro predators that feed on blood. They are normally active at night. Their size ranges from 1-7mm and they can fit in small gaps due to their flat oval shape. Bedbugs can infest your home in many different ways and infestations are not solely the result of bad hygiene. Complete eradication of a bedbug infestation can be difficult and requires cooperation between the customer and pest controller.

German cockroaches

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are resilient insects that can be a major pest of homes and food establishments. The German and Oriental cockroach are common in the UK and thrive in hot, humid conditions. The Oriental cockroach mainly lives in the sewer system and is normally found around drains or sewer pipework.

Wasps

The Common Wasp and German Wasp are the most common species of wasp in the UK. They will build nests in wall cavities, loft spaces, in the ground and in trees. Wasps can be dangerous if you approach the nest or attempt treatment without the right equipment.

A wasp nest starts in spring and will be at its largest during July and August, by late September and early October the nest will die off due to colder temperatures and the queen will find a good spot for hibernation.

Fleas

Humans are usually bitten by the Cat Flea, Dog Flea and Human Flea. The bites will normally be located around the ankles or forearm if you have stroked your pet. The bites will be in large groups or clusters and will appear as red dots.

If you suspect you have a flea infestation in your home and you have a dog or cat then the first step is to have your pet checked and treated if necessary.

Spiders

Part of the class Arachnida, these eight legged predators are great pest controllers but are often the thing of nightmares for the majority of people. Most spiders in the UK are harmless and pose no risk to humans. The False Widow can pierce human skin with its bite and deliver a dose of venom but this is not particularly potent and may just cause some pain around the puncture site.
