If you are reading this blog you are most likely being kept awake by rats running around in your loft or walls during the night and are desperate for a solution. The most obvious place to start would be looking around the exterior of the property for any obvious holes that could be allowing entry, but have you thought about the underground pipes under and around your house?.
The Brown rat ( Rattus Norvegicus ) is the most common species of rat in the UK, it is also known as the sewer rat. The sewer system is an underground motorway for the Brown rat, they will feed on food waste that has been flushed down sinks and human faeces. A rat infestation in a domestic property is usually linked to the sewer system, if you have a defective waste pipe running under or around your house it can allow rats entry into the floor and wall cavities where eventually they will make their way into the loft and nest in insulation.
But how do you find out if this is the cause?
A CCTV drain survey can find defective or redundant waste pipes underneath your property, action can then be taken to either repair or isolate the pipe from the main sewer system so rats can no longer gain entry. Your local water authority can be asked to carry out this inspection but may not inspect all pipework around your house due to ownership boundaries.
