Known as one of Britain's most feared pests. Wasps can not only be a nuisance, a sting could potentially be fatal if an allergic reaction occurs. This blog covers wasps and their control.
The two main species of wasp you are likely to come across in the UK are the Common Wasp ( Vespula Vulgaris ) and the German Wasp ( Vespula Germanica ). Both species are black and yellow striped with a pinched waist and painful stings that can cause an allergic reaction.
Wasps will normally only attack a person if they feel threatened but a nest in or around your property may cause distress or fear. A Wasp sting will release a pheromone causing other colony members to attack as a defensive response, when this occurs it is best to walk away calmly as panicking will only make the wasps more aggressive.. but we know this isn't always easy.
Queen wasps emerge in spring and start working on new nests, this year wasps and bees have been seen earlier than usual due to warmer weather.
Where will you find wasps nests?
Nests will usually be located in sheltered areas such as:
Under trees
In bushes
Inside wall cavities
Under eaves
Inside loft spaces
In the shed or garage
If you treat a wasps nest early they will be less aggressive. Treating wasps nests is dangerous and should be carried out using the correct PPE and application equipment, hiring a professional pest controller is always the safest and most effective option.
DIY treatments using sprays will only kill a small number of wasps, nests are normally treated using an insecticide dust that will kill off the colony over a few days.
